SUMINAGASHI PAPER MARBLING WORKSHOP – JULY 25

NEW WORKSHOP-WEBB2

205 Lavinia is delighted to announce that Diane Maurer will be teaching a Japanese suminagashi marbling workshop @ Studios on Walnut, 310 Walnut Street in Milton, Delaware on Saturday, July 25 from 10am to 2pm.

Pale meandering lines and jagged rings of color are the hallmark of Japanese Suminagashi marbling.  A favorite of paper decorators for over 800 years, this is an easy, almost meditative type of marbling. In this class you’ll learn to float dyes on water, fan, blow or tease them into designs and apply a sheet of absorbent paper to make a contact print. We’ll concentrate on eastern techniques and add some western take-offs like multiple-image work and kitty-whisker prints to spice things up.

We’ll begin this class by exploring Suminagashi marbling on paper and then apply the techniques to marble silk. You’ll leave class with beautiful papers, a silk scarf and a new technique to use for quilting, bookbinding or making wearable art.

COST: $125
Supply List: Please come prepared with an apron or other dye-appropriate clothing as well as a packed lunch.
Materials Fee:  $12 payable to the instructor at the time of the class covers paper, dyes, surfactant, silk and paper towels.

“THE MARBLING GROUP” – PAPER ART EXHIBITION – TALK & DEMO – MHS

Milton Historical Society, in collaboration with 205 Lavinia, announces a teacher-student art exhibition, The Marbling Group. A reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, June 26. Accomplished musician Jimmy Keane will be playing instrumental finger-style guitar for entertainment during the reception.

Diane Maurer will give a talk and demonstration on fancy watercoloring marbling and a book signing from 7 to 8 p.m., Thursday, June 25, for her republished book, “Ultimate Marbling Handbook.” Both events will be held at the Milton Historical Society, 210 Union St. in Milton.

In November, Maurer offered two workshops: Traditional Watercoloring Marbling and Drawing Designs in Color Paste. The enthusiasm of the 11 participants inspired Jeanie Greenhaugh to turn her antiquated photographic darkroom into a marbling studio to incorporate the pieces from the workshop in an exhibition.

For the last few months the group has been creating art pieces from paper, which include a faux collage of one of the stained glass windows at the Milton Historical Society, marbling on silk scarves, collages on boxes, doilies, greeting cards, marbling on wood, slate, framing and reproducing the marbling, and paste paper on canvases. Each piece is a one-of-a-kind design.

The exhibit will also display Maurer’s beautiful, exclusive line of creations which marbling, paste paper notecards, silk scarves, original framed marbling and paper paste collages.

Maurer’s marbling art has been exhibited throughout the world. Her work is represented in many museums and libraries. Commissions include designs for Godiva Chocolates, The White House and numerous book publishers. She has taught marbling throughout the United States and made guest appearances on several television shows including “Martha Stewart Living.” She is the author of 13 books about paper art and collage.

Many of these items will be available for purchase. The exhibit will run through July 24. For more information, go to https://www.205lavinia.com

Traditional Watercoloring Marbling Workshop
Saturday Nov. 8, 2014 – 10 am – 4 pm

Traditional watercolor marbling, which dates from 15th century Persia, involves floating special paints or inks on water to which a thickening agent has been added. The colors are combed into patterns and a treated paper is applied to receive the design. Marbling is a graphic process which produces unique contact prints. Broom straw whisks and brushes are often used to apply color to a carrageenan marbling size. The combs and rakes will be used to create a classical marbled design. $12 Supply fee payable to instructor at the time of class. Cost $125   If you have any questions you can call 302-381-0322 or E-mail: 205lavinia@earthlink.net  Space is limited, so reserve now by clicking on the buy now button below or send a check to 205 Lavinia Street, Milton, DE. 19968

Paste Paper Design Workshop
Sunday Nov. 9, 2014 – 10 am – 4 pm
For centuries, artisans have been decorating papers by drawing designs in colored paste. The basic technique involves dampening a sheet of paper, brushing on a coat of colored paste, and drawing various implements through the paste to displace it and create patterns. Kitchen tools, calligraphy pens, carved brayers and found objects can be used to make deceptively sophisticated designs. In this photo I’m using a rubber graining comb to create a scalloped design. $12 Supply fee payable to instructor at the time of class. Supplies: Bring two 2″ wide house paint brushes. Cost $125  If you have any questions you can call 302-381-0322 or E-mail: 205lavinia@earthlink.net  Space is limited, so reserve now by clicking on the buy now button below or send a check to 205 Lavinia Street, Milton, DE. 19968
